Exploring the deep-rooted soccer culture of Portland.

Portland is a soccer city in a way that few American cities are. The Timbers Army is one of the most passionate supporter groups in MLS, and that energy permeates everything — from the youth academies to the Sunday leagues to the coffee shop conversations.

Providence Park is one of the great soccer venues in North America. The intimacy of the stadium, the steep stands, the noise — it creates an atmosphere that rivals anything in Europe. When the Timbers score, the sawdust flies and the city shakes.

The Culture

What separates Portland is the authenticity of its soccer culture. This isn't a city that adopted the sport because it was trendy. Portland has been a soccer city since the NASL days, and that history gives the current scene a depth and credibility that's rare in American soccer.

Where to Play

The city's park system is excellent, with well-maintained pitches throughout. The most competitive pickup scene is at Glenhaven Park in the northeast, where games run from early morning until dark on weekends. The level of play is high — you'll find former college players, ex-professionals, and serious amateurs all competing together.

The Timbers Army

If you're visiting Portland, you need to experience a Timbers match. Get your scarf, learn the songs, and stand with the Army. It's one of the most authentic soccer experiences in American football.
